It is important to measure the room that you plan to install the pool table into to ensure that there is enough room to play comfortably. Use the Pool Table Room Size Requirements Chart above to determine the minimum space requirements needed for a particular pool table size and pool cue length combination. The length of a standard pool cue is 58 inches. Short cues in various lengths are available for rooms with support poles or other obstructions.
There are many options on how to play pool in a room that is less than the ideal room size for a pool table. The most popular option is to use a combination of regular length (58”) pool cues and short pool cues.
Pole Obstruction in Room
In most cases, regular length (58”) cues can be used for regular play and a short cue (36” – 52”) is used for the occasional shot where the pole is interfering. In some instances, the best solution is to position the side of the pool table close the pole and play around the pole with regular length cues.
Partial Wall Obstruction in Room
In most cases, regular length (58”) cues can be used for regular play and a short cue (36” – 52”) is used for the occasional shot where the wall section is interfering. It is common to position a pool table closer to a partial wall obstruction and thus allow for less cue interference on the side of the room where there is a full wall.
Room Size is Smaller Than Ideal
In some cases, the best solution to fit a pool table into a room that is smaller than ideal is to use slightly shorter length (52”) cues for regular play. Many players will not even notice the difference when playing with a 52” cue versus a 58” cue.
Pool Table Sizes
The regulation size for a pool table is 4.5' x 9' (9 foot), but the 4' x 8' (8 foot) pool table size is the most popular choice for home use.
